ABOUT JEAN
"I want to capture images, people and emotions..."
It was that desire that led Jean Rado-Thorso to turn to sculpture as the best expression of her artistic talent. Her sculpture represents the culmination of years of study and work that began as a childhood desire to be a Disney animator. In high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jean caught the interest of an inspiring art teacher and her path was set. Following her degree in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, Jean continued to study and refine her talent wherever she found herself from the l'Ecole des Beaux Art (Geneva, Switzerland) to New York Art Student's League to Otis/Parson's (Los Angeles) to Marble carving in Pietrasanta, Italy as well as with Don Gale, Bruno Lucchesi, and Robert Cunningham in private studios. As she traveled from Iowa to Michigan, Japan, Switzerland, France, New York, Italy and to Los Angeles she continued to work as her reputation grew.
After studying paintings, graphics and printmaking Jean found herself drawn increasingly toward the more tactile process of sculpture. So, the learning and exploration began-from immersing herself in the process from clay model to finished piece. Jean sought to understand each detail that would allow her to achieve the most complete expression of her vision. Because there is nothing more beautiful or expressive, her preference of subject became the human form. This, in turn, led her to bronze as her medium of choice for its purity and ability to convey fine detail.
In addition to continuing to show her sculpture in selected venues such as Loveland, CO., the range of her work can be seen at the Cosmopolitan Gallery in La Jolla, CA. Commissions have increased for her sculpture, including a life size bronze monument of Charles Mellen Knight for the University of Ohio at Akron. For the future, Jean plans to continue executing commissions and hopes to see her sculpture join her graphics in museums around the world.
